California Health Care Association endorses educational video
"It is so important for family members to be educated from the very beginning. Then, they are so much better able to understand from the start about the realities of day-to-day life," Peggy Goldstein, vice president of the California Association of Health Facilities, said when endorsing a new educational video about long-term care.
The video, Setting Realistic Expectations, is produced by Extended Care Products, Inc.
"We are very excited that the California association recognized the need to properly inform residents’ families about day-to-day life in a nursing home," Chip Kessler, development manager, said. "It is very gratifying to have one of the largest and most influential state health care associations agree that this educational process is most essential."
Designed in conjunction with ECP’s risk management professionals, and attorneys actively involved in nursing home liability defense, the video is to be viewed as part of a long-term care facility’s admissions process. Setting Realistic Expectations’ goal is to reduce litigation, misunderstandings and nuisance complaints by educating families and setting realistic expectations - before situations occur.
"The video serves as an excellent springboard for discussion between the family and the nursing home concerning what the resident can experience and why," Goldstein said.
ECP recommends the family and, if feasible, the prospective resident, watch the video together. The admissions officer utilizes the 15-minute video to provide information while opening lines of communication with the family to ensure the resident receives the best possible care. The company also suggests providing a copy of the video to each family so they can view it again and share it with other relatives. This helps all family members better understand what a resident may experience, and can prevent potential lawsuits.
"Setting Realistic Expectations plays an important part in a nursing home’s desire to help families achieve a better level of understanding, and is a wonderful communication tool that helps explain and inform," Goldstein said.
